Finance 2030: What to Do This Quarter

A destination several years out does not tell you what to change next. Choose one next-quarter improvement with a first action, its prerequisite resolved, an owner and the evidence the following investment review will need.

Example / three evidence conditions

Earn the next investment decision.

Fewer than 40 unmatched items

At day three, for two comparable closes after dual running.

8 working days or fewer

Two completed closes. Full checklist sign-off stops the clock.

1 calendar month of CRM checks

Every scheduled weekly check passes, with both snapshots.

Also confirm applications-lead capacity and room in the systems budget. Then review the forecast’s own business case. These conditions are evidence, not approval.

The CRM checks extend beyond quarter-end; compare evidence availability with the review date.

Example: fewer than 40 unmatched items at day three for two comparable closes, close complete in eight working days or fewer twice, every weekly CRM-feed check passes in a calendar month; also confirm capacity and funding.

Finance 2030: start with one business unit and let the evidence guide the next step.

What you can do with it

Use the recommendations in your next decision.

  1. 01

    What do I do now?

Write how finance will operate in 2030 in the words your strategy uses, and the milestone on the way to it; then the constraint that stops it today in the words your team uses. List the candidates for this quarter that remove a constraint, and compare them on impact, feasibility, effort and dependencies.

  2. 02

    How do I do it?

Choose the improvement the function can finish with the capacity it has, resolve its prerequisite as part of the plan, and write the first action with its cost and owner. For each condition the next review will look at, write the measure, the period, the source record, the owner and the correction path before the quarter starts.

  3. 03

    Who should be involved?

The finance leader decides on the recommendation of the people who own the work. The person accountable for the old way accepts the new way in writing after one clean cycle; the owner of any prerequisite outside finance is named with a date.

  4. 04

    How do I choose?

Say whether the next investment shares capacity or funding with this one. If it does, this quarter's results are the evidence its review needs; if not, keep the reviews separate. Either way the next investment needs its own case, and the money stays where it is until the conditions are met.

What it comes with

The note takes a finance function's 2030 ambition and works one quarter of it: three candidates compared on impact, feasibility, effort and dependencies, one chosen with its first action and cost, the prerequisite of the one that waits put on the table with a date, and the conditions the next investment review will look at, each with its measure, period, source record, owner and correction path.

  • Guidance note. One quarter worked from a 2030 finance ambition, with the decision record and the condition record.
