When Should We Revisit an AI Decision?

A review date can be a real control. It stops being one when nothing is attached to it, and when the events that change the answer arrive between the dates with nobody watching.

Two routes into review

A date and a change can both trigger review.

Scheduled review

An agreed date, named owner and current evidence.

Event trigger

A defined change, an observer and the action to take.

Both lead to triage, recorded evidence and a decision. Escalate a new error class or control failure immediately. Keep the current control until its authorized owner changes it.

Other triggers follow their defined urgency and threshold; a trigger does not itself authorize change.
Read the diagram

Scheduled and event-triggered reviews converge on triage, evidence and an accountable decision. New error classes or control failures require immediate escalation.

What you can do with it

Use the recommendations in your next decision.

  1. 01

    What do I do now?

Take one AI decision your organization has already made and funded, and give its scheduled review the two things that make it a control: the evidence to be examined, named in advance, and the person accountable for bringing it.

  2. 02

    How do I do it?

Write three or four event triggers against that decision, each carrying the event stated so two people would agree it had happened, the role who sees it first, the one or two artifacts they bring, and what happens next and how fast.

  3. 03

    Who should be involved?

The decision owner writes them. The people named in the triggers are told, because a trigger nobody has been told about is not a control.

  4. 04

    How do I choose?

Each trigger resolves to reopen the decision, log it and carry it to the scheduled review, or escalate immediately. Anything describing a control failure or a new error class takes the third route.

What it comes with

The note sets out what makes a scheduled review a control, the event classes that change an AI decision between the dates, and the four elements a trigger needs to be operable. An example carries four triggers and shows which of them fire.

  • Guidance note. The trigger set and the four elements that make one operable.
